Welcome to the Shipleys of Maryland Website
Founded in 1925, the Shipleys of Maryland is one of the nation’s oldest family history and genealogical organizations. We are an active organization, hosting a family picnic each summer and a luncheon each fall, publishing two newsletters each year, and sponsoring ongoing genealogical research and publications.

Our annual picnic is held each June, and our annual Luncheon is held every October.

We trace our roots to Adam Shipley, a young Yorkshireman who came from England to Annapolis in 1668 as an indentured servant. After completing his term, he established himself as a successful landowner and tobacco farmer. Adam and his wife, Lois, raised six children. Their many descendants live across the United States and beyond.
More than 350 years later, the family continues to thrive. Join us to learn more about Shipley history, receive our newsletters, and participate in annual picnics and business meetings that have brought relatives together for a century.
Members enjoy access to a wealth of family history and genealogy resources drawn from our growing collection of records, including a separate genealogical database website and a Facebook page for Shipleys to connect and share family information with one another.
The phrase "of Maryland" in our name refers to the colony where Adam Shipley settled when he arrived from England. Within a few generations, his descendants began to spread out across the colonies, and today they reside throughout the US. As such, we are a nationwide organization. In fact, less than half of our current members actually reside in Maryland.
This website serves as the focal point for our organization, providing information about our current activities as well as a wide variety of Shipley heritage materials. It includes general information we provide for the public, as well as more extensive information reserved only for our members. This website is an ongoing project, and we have considerably more material on-hand that we plan to post. Please check back often to see what's new.
